Owen fue la primera persona en operar como radioaficionado desde el espacio.

Owen Kay Garriott​ (Oklahoma, 22 de noviembre de 1930 – Alabama, 15 de abril de 2019) fue un ingeniero eléctrico estadounidense y astronauta de la NASA, quien pasó 60 días a bordo de la estación espacial Skylab en 1973, durante la misión Skylab 3 y 10 días a bordo del Spacelab-1, en un misión del transbordador en 1983.

Militar de Estados Unidos. Garriott se desempeñó como oficial de electrónica en la Armada de los Estados Unidos desde 1953 hasta 1956. Desde 1961 hasta 1965 fue profesor asistente, luego profesor asociado en el Departamento de Ingeniería Eléctrica de la Universidad de Stanford. Realizó investigaciones y dirigió estudios de posgrado en física ionosférica después de obtener su doctorado, y fue autor o coautor de más de 45 artículos científicos, capítulos y un libro, principalmente en áreas de las ciencias físicas.

Completó un Programa de entrenamiento de pilotos de la Fuerza Aérea de Estados Unidos por un año en 1966, y recibió la calificación de piloto en aviones a reacción.

SSTV Event planned for Early August
ARISS plans to celebrate the life and accomplishments of astronaut, scientist and ham radio pioneer Owen Garriott with a commemorative SSTV event featuring images from Garriott’s work with ham radio during his missions in space. This event is currently scheduled to begin on August 1 at 09:40 UTC and ends at 18:15 UTC on August 4. Please make note that the content of these upcoming SSTV transmissions may change. An update is expected after Friday, July 26 as to what the image content will be for the August 1-4 dates. If this change takes place, the Owen Garriott image transmissions will be postponed until another event can be scheduled toward the end of August.
Transmissions will be sent at 145.800 MHz FM in the SSTV mode PD-120. Once received, images can be posted and viewed by the public at http://www.spaceflightsoftware.com/ARISS_SSTV/index.php and you can receive a special SSTV ARISS Award for posting your image.
